Pattern: Wedding Rose
Quilter: Jean (Shoemaker) Ayars

This "Wedding Rose" quilt by Jean (Shoemaker) Ayars was crafted in honor of her marriage to James Arthur Ayars on Oct. 14, 1995 at Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie by Kyle, Wester-Ross, Scotland.

To celebrate their engagement, in the gardens of Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, Jim sung his beloved fiancee a famous poem by Scottish legend Robert Burns: My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose. The notes for the duet they sung during their wedding -- O Perfect Love -- are in the musical staff running around the inner border of the quilt. There are four hearts, one at each corner. Within each heart is embroidered a key feature of their wedding: the date of their marriage, the place ("Eilean Donan Castle"), the country ("Scotland") and a love note ("Jean Loves Jim.").

Jim  is a descendant of Uriah and Matilda (Bodle) Minerd of Carson City and Hubbardston, MI.
