Pattern: Skye Mist
Quilter: Jean (Shoemaker) Ayars

This "Skye Mist" pattern, an original design by Jean (Shoemaker) Ayars, won top honors for original applique at the 1996 Kentucky State Fair. It was crafted in honor of her and her husband James' ancestral homeland, the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The applique is of the Scottish Thistle, the national flower of Scotland. The colors on the border are of the Scottish heather, and the green of the Scottish moors. Celtic knot designs are in the quilting patterns between the thistles -- they do not show up well in this photograph, but each one is distinct and different.

Jean's husband, James Arthur Ayars, also can count Germany among his other ancestral homelands. He is a descendant of Uriah and Matilda (Bodle) Minerd of Carson City and Hubbardston, MI.
