April 2007

The end of winter and coming of spring always means the opening of the baseball season where hope springs eternal. This image, showing semi-pro or amateur baseball players with the Brave village team in the Waynesburg (PA) Athletic Club, was taken sometime in the mid-1910s. Among them players are two brothers -- Albert "Ross" Minor is in the front row, far right, and his elder brother William Thomas Minor in the middle row, second from left.

This is one in a Minerd.com series of old baseball images of community and coal mining baseball teams that were popular a century ago, but don't exist anymore. A photograph of a uniformed Ross in a freeze-frame "action" pose taken in a studio was our "Photo of the Month" five years ago, in April 2002. See also our January 2007 "Photo of the Month" featuring Ralph Charles Minerd of the Belltown coal mining team of near Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County, PA; and our August 2000 "Photo of the Month" highlighting Rev. William Mullen Minerd of the H.C. Frick Coke Company's Brinkerton Works Club, also of near Mt. Pleasant.
