Edna Eleanora (Miner) Talbert
(1903-1993)

Edna Eleanora (Miner) Talbert was born on Feb. 15, 1903 in Bolivar, Marion Township, Polk County, MO, the daughter of Daniel Lucas and Mary Elizabeth (Hodges) Minerd.

As a girl, she moved with her parents and siblings to Bagley, IA.

On July 28, 1921, when she was age 18, Edna married 21-year-old Howard Forest Talbert (Feb. 11, 1900-1983), the son of Samuel and Jennie L. (Simpson) Talbert, and a native of North Hampton, IL. The wedding took place in Jefferson, Greene County, IA, with justice of the peace O.W. Harris presiding.

They together bore a brood of four children -- Bessie Marie Kopel, Vivian Louise Tichy, Lester Laverne Talbert and Ardyth Linthacum.

When their son Lester was born in 1928, the Talberts were in Berkley, Boone County, IA, with Howard laboring as a farmer and trucker. Then in 1930, the family resided in Wisconsin, in a home they owned in Brandon, Fon du Lac County. Howard worked in Brandon as a road construction laborer. Living next door were Howard's parents.

They returned to Iowa and in 1940 lived in Marshalltown, Marshall County. That year, the couple may have been separated, as Howard was away from the family. Edna worked as a collector at an ice plant at that time to generate income. Her brother Frederick and his family dwelled in the next house. As of 1942, Howard was unemployed, with his address 707 South Second Street, and Edna's address 27 North Center Street, both in Marshalltown.

Howard was required to register for the military draft during World War II. He was measured at standing 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing 165 lbs., and with a slightly crippled left hand. He joined the Army on Nov. 14, 1942 and served during the war with the rank of private first class. He received his discharge on April 3, 1943.

The federal census enumeration of 1950 shows that the pair were divorced. He lived by himself in 1950 in Marshalltown and had no job.

Howard was employed by Fisher Governor Company, joining the workforce there on Nov. 30, 1951 as a shop trucker. He went on to become a large turret lathe operator on the third and second shifts, and for a brief time in the company's stores department. At some point, Howard purchased an acre of land near Marshalltown. He retired at the age of 65 with plans to garden and fish.

Howard at age 83 passed away in Marshalltown, Marshall County, IA on March 31, 1983.

Edna outlived her former husband by a decade, and died at age 90 in Marshalltown on Aug. 16, 1993. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. Inscribed on the face of her grave marker is the hymn name "How great thou art."
