Effie Maude (Miner)
Fisher Miller
(1886-1961 )

Effie Maude (Miner) Fisher-Miller born on March 8, 1886 in Union Grove Township, Whiteside County, IL, the daughter of Daniel Lucas and Mary Elizabeth (Hodges) Minerd. She was a survivor, outliving her husband and both of her children, all of whom she lost before she reached age 38.

As a girl, Effie moved with her parents to Missouri, and thence to Iowa.

On Oct. 10, 1906, Effie married George Frederick Fisher Jr. (1879-1910), son of George F. and Sophronia Fisher Sr. The marriage took place in Boliver, Polk County, MO.

The Fishers produced two children -- George Harry Fisher and Mary Catherine Fisher.

After just four years of marriage, tragedy struck twice in the span of two weeks. Three-year-old son George passed away on Oct. 3, 1910, in Marion Township. Just 12 days later, father Fred died at the young age of 31, also on Oct. 15, 1910, at Marion.

Heartbroken and pregnant with their second child, Effie was left to wait out her pregnancy for a hope of a family. On Dec. 7 of that year, daughter Mary Catherine was born.

But the Grim Reaper was not yet done with its work. At age 13, young Mary Catherine died on Jan. 25, 1923 in Panora, Guthrie County, IA. We can only imagine Effie's sorrow at having borne all her griefs by age 37.

Widowed and childless, Effie remained single for many decades. She married again, in June 1957, to John Miller ( ? - ? ), in Mena, Polk County, AR. The marriage only lasted a few years, and the couple was divorced.

John died in Mena on May 30, 1963, and was buried in Pine Crest.

Effie passed away, also in Mena, on Oct. 8, 1968.
