This vintage image of the Turkeyfoot Regular Baptist Church near Ursina, Somerset County, PA, also known as the "Jersey Church," is not dated and the faces are not identified. It is the the oldest church west of the Allegheny Mountains.
Some 30 major branches of Younkin cousins have been involved with this body of believers over the centuries as leaders, members and donors, including more than 300 cousins and spouses who sleep for the ages in the sacred soil of its adjoining cemetery. Among the burials are 55 bearing the Younkin family name. Aged Civil War veterans were honored here over the years in cleanups and ceremonies marking Memorial Day, known then as "Decoration Day," with some of our cousins taking part. The site was a destination stop for Younkin Reunion cemetery tour in 1994.
Below, this photograph has been scanned in high resolution and cropped in six equal sections and enlarged below for easier study of the faces. Scroll down for more.
The grave markers at far left of this image appear to be topped in mounds of fresh earth and one instance marked with a small United States flag and covered with flowers. This suggests that the event could have been a Memorial Day commemoration of the military fallen, also known as Decoration Day. Two of the older men are wearing hats bearing the insignia of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Civil War veterans from the Union Army.
